The Haunting of Willington Mill                           169

In 1800, three men opened up a flour mill in a village called Willington Quay in the industrial heartland of the north east of England. From the outset the mill house on the site was reputed to be haunted.

Later, the haunting caught the attention of The Society for Psychical Research, and some of the world’s leading Victorian paranormal investigators attempted to solve one of the country’s most enduring supernatural enigmas.  Although some advances were made in getting to the bottom of the mystery, no one was or has been able to find out why a rather innocent-looking mansion house was subjected to decades of poltergeist-like activity, the appearance of bizarre-looking animals and the attention of a number of competent mediums and psychics. Until now, that is.

Michael J. Hallowell and Darren W. Ritson have carried out exhaustive research into the case. After unearthing rare, archived documents and gaining access to parts of the haunted location hitherto unexplored, the authors  were,  for  the  first time, able to piece together astounding aspects of the puzzle. With the help of two of the country’s most celebrated psychic mediums, a tale  unfolded  of murder, witchcraft,  lies,  deception, time-slips and the verification of one of mankind’s most enduring beliefs - life after death.

Over one-hundred and fifty years ago,  a young housewife received a series of startling visions which explained much of what had transpired at Willington Mill. The transcripts of her utterances - which were witnessed by a number of professional investigators, including a well-respected physician - were almost completely buried by the sands of time until  the authors unearthed them.  The two modern-day mediums - household names in the UK and abroad - assisted the authors in their quest to discover the truth behind those last hidden aspects of the affair.

What they divulged was astonishing, for it verified everything said by the little-known mediumistic housewife two centuries earlier - and more. The authors  also discovered an old book, the inside cover of which contained a series of mysterious handwritten notes and references to the case. These, too, proved to be of great value in helping them solve the case.
